i think fish finder kinda takes the sport out of fishing
me i have a fishfinder but its only for Boats
when your moving your boat if a fish comes the fish finder will go BEEP and show a fish. If it is a HUGE one it will beep 3 – 2 times… well good try!
Wish your Dad a Happy ChristMas for me :]
Smooth Guy
I do but i use a better make than that eg garmin or lowrance, it would be ok for general fishing i imagine but you cant beat garmin for fishfinders although they will cost allot more.

I have a Fishin Buddy portble fishfinder, and I love it. It just clamps to the side of the boat and runs on 6 AA batteries. It works for ice fishing too. Really I don’t think i need a fancy fish finder, the most important thing is something to tell you the depth, and show you under water structure. If he doesn’t already have a fishfiner, this is a good starter for him. He may decide he needs a fancy one some day, or like me just be satisfied with the portable model.
And for whoever said a fishfinder takes the sport out of it, well, thats spoken like someone who doesn’t catch many fish!!! Fishing is always fun, but more fun with a fish finder. What can I say, us boys love our toys!
Read some reviews on it and for the nominal price, I say go for it. Goin’ to have a great deal to do as what with john_climbs mention of, if he doesn’t have one already than this one be a good start and if need be in the future go to a more advanced type.
. As for one puttin’ it, “takes the sport outta’ fishin’ ” I disagree, I’ve been fishin’ for MANY a’ years (bout’ 55 or better) and up until 5 years ago I would have thought the same thing, but after installin’ one on our boat ~ “I HAVE SEEN DA’ LIGHT”. Whatever your decision, am sure your father will love it and put it ta’ great use ~ “Look out fish, here comes my Dad”!
…
Link below is Amazon which offers it for a bit lesser price (hope it be the same model you have in mind?), but if your gettin’ it from the Target store itself (no S&H) then that’d be the way

i have many kinds of fish finders, but my newest gadget is a smartcast RF 25 by HUMMINBIRD, its a ‘mini’ . viewer/screen straps to rod, tie tiny transducer to your line. its great for solving those ‘bottom’ mystery’s in fresh water ponds and salt water too, i mostly use it for shore-line fishing. it fits in your pocket too. cost me $98. with tax…
I personally don’t like them because I liked to be suprised lol BUT I use to have one and Hawkeye is a good brand… You can search online to compare prices…
Is he a pretty “hardcore” fisherman?
Most diligent fishermen would like a Lowrance, Bottom Line, Garmin or Hummingbird.
Realize that this Hawkeye is just a glorified “depth” reader. With the amount of pixels it has it probably won’t record fish well in weedy, rocky, heavy thermocline environs.
In fish recorders , “you get what you pay for”.
Hope this helps? Good luck!
A good fish finder is such a great asset and very helpful in locating fish. I had one in our boat and many of the better ones will show the bottom, the drop off spots, the beds, the depth and even the color to use for lures or beads on a cloudy day, sunny day, etc. Not sure how much info you will get on the one you are thinking of getting, but any angler would love to have a fish finder! Great choice!
You get what you pay for.
I have used Humminbird Matrix and they work all right. The Lowrance unit I have on the boat even catches the movement of my spoon when I jig. Those are not portable.
If your budget allows, Humminbird Smartcast series might be a good bet.
Again, I’ve never used Hawkeye before. They might be good as well.
